(Course Code: IT1)
Course Description. Computers have changed the way we lead our lives at work and at home. Whether you are entirely new to computers, or already have a little experience, this course will give you the basic skills and techniques you need to start using a computer with confidence. The course is designed for beginners, so there’s no jargon to confuse you - just simple instructions to help you feel comfortable around computers, no matter how nervous you are.
Aims. The course explains the main components of a computer and shows you how to use the mouse and the keyboard. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll learn how to connect to people, information and resources (World Wide Web) using the Internet and you’ll explore how to create and save a document. The course begins by looking at the different parts of a typical desktop computer system and helps you to master the basics - from switching on the computer to understanding the most common IT terms. Then you'll learn how to find your way around the computer - how to open a programme, how to use it and how to shut down your computer when you have finished. You'll have the chance to create and save a simple document and you’ll learn how to make changes to a document and how to print it. Finally, you'll learn about computer security – how to back up files so they don't get lost and how to protect your computer against viruses.
